Coxing Notes

Information provided for coxes and strokes

Ready to race?
All the equipment OK?
Who are your opposition? Blade design, crew ABCDE, etc.
What time is the race? (I suggest setting watches to radio four)
Which station are you on?
Schedule for crew - meet 90 mins before

Boating
You are boating the wrong way round at the Boathouses - THINK
Cross just below OUBC (just after ChChBC, on marshal's command)
Paddle down transit lane - buoys
Go down through Gut: Tell Marshal who you are

Warm-Up

Usual rules apply below the gut
Try to get in about 1 min. full pressure
If not, several short bursts
Check: Gates, seats, feet, clothes are out of way
No food, but sips of water are a good idea
Back to the gut when instructed (4-5 minutes to go)
Where are your opposition?

Lining Up
On correct station? (City = Green Bank)
Bows onto top end of Longbridges raft
When start marshal says "Come forward to race," come to front stops
HAND UP
Bow pair to set the stagger and straighten (Start marshal will assist)
Stern Pair to back down to straighten (Start marshal will assist)
STAY CALM AND CONFIDENT
Watch the other boat
Hand down when ready
Start command: ATTENTION! GO!!

RACING
Look ahead to steer
Corret side of buoys - watch blades
Follow your race plan
Sound confident
Encourage, but not every stroke
Where is the other crew?
Go through the finish line, not up to it

After the race
Keep paddling well past the line
Three cheers!!
Turn carefully (when instructed)
Boathouse Island side - landing wrong way: THINK

After the finish
Turn onto bowside (reverse spin)
Stay tucked well into Meadow side
Boathouse Island crews - straight back to raft
OUBC crews - cross at first crossing point on marshal's instructions
Longbridges: Second crossing point
NO RESERVING RAFTS, PLEASE!!!

Emergencies
KLAXON - Stop immediatley. "HOLD IT HARD!"
DON'T PANIC!
First aid posts - know locations
After finish - tell marshal to radio
Tell your coach/runner to get help
If you must cross course - clear the way

You will be disqualified if.......
Boating without life jacket/bow bobble/EA Licence/Crew Identification
Not having crew name clearly displayedd on cox and bowman's back
Turning up very late for race
Disobeying the start marshal
LEAVING YOUR LANE WHEN RACING. EVEN IF YOU ARE MILES AHEAD!
More than one cycle follows you
We observe dangerous cycling
Any other dangerous conduct
Audible abusive language
